Who chose the artists and why? April 3, 2010 Eileen H. Pierce This might have been a potentially great collection, but sadly,is a "falls short", collection. Ed Sullivan would never have allowed its release, as is. Why are bands like the Dave Clark Five missing completely, when I recollect they were Sullivan's favorite, and performed more often than any other, and trivial artists included? Way too much "chatter" of little value is included. Petula Clark was great--I saw all of these performances back then--but her entire song is in,as a few others, when the IMPORTANT ones are brief clips, or missing completely. AFTER Petula had performed a mere 2-3 minutes earlier, they announce, "The British Are Coming!!!, next". This looks like a collection someone who just didn't "get" that era directed. Hello, Petula Clark was a Brit too, and not in the very, very first wave. Did this have an editor??
Great, but returned ... January 7, 2010 Lucinda Chevallier (Seattle, WA, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We love this DVD set, but after ordering it for my husband for Christmas he went ahead and got it on his own so I returned it. They were wonderful about returning and refunding ... great to work with! +++++
Pleased! December 30, 2009 Michael Frank (Bellevue, WA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The picture quality is A-1, pristine, perfect!
Unfortunately, some songs are edited, hence my not giving the set 5 stars. I have no beef at all with the educational material included between songs that discusses the artists and/or their appearance(s) on Sullivan, because it adds to the pleasure and thus isn't just playing one isolated song after another, which would be a poor way to present them.
There is SOME overlap with the 9-disc Sullivan set, unfortunately, as others have mentioned here. But by far most of the performances captured here complement the 9-disc set, and don't repeat it.
The Sam & Dave "I Thank You" performance is a RARE classic with the Stax Records "Dancing Horns" section, who are way cool, and is the only performance with the Dancing Horns available anywhere. I actually had previously bought the "Sounds of the Cities" disc with that track, just the 1 disc, elsewhere, but that DVD had that darker, film-like, older-looking British-PAL look. This entire set, conversely, has that bright, colorful, crystal-clear American VIDEO look, just the way it should!
Glad to have gotten this set!
Ed Sullivan's Rock and Roll classics December 1, 2009 crazywoman (New Haven, New York United States) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I watched this on PBS last night and loved seeing the Beach Boys both as the original group-the Wilson brothers, Mike Love and Al Jardine and then later, with Carl Wilson singing Good Vibrations with Dennis Wilson on drums and Brian behind the scenes. All of these groups are amazing. I have to admit that I forgot how they looked back then. My favorite I Get Around clip is on u tube by Tommytaper but this collection is worth every penny!
A Music Collection Must November 4, 2009 magdad (Bellingham, WA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I read other reviews slamming this DVD set as not worthwhile due to introductions of the clips, etc. It depends on your perspective as to whether this is annoying or a waste of time. All in all they're brief and for the content that is on this set and the price compared to the PBS rip off pricing it's worthwhile to have. I enjoyed it and it does have quite a bit of decent content on it. Where else would you get these clips of such music legends?
