Product Description The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.
Amazon.com The Beatles Mono Box Set was compiled as a special interest package for the hard-core fan. It presents the first ten albums in re-mastered mono (the final 3 albums made their debuts in stereo only), and a double album of singles and EPs, called "Mono Masters". At the time of writing, the mono albums are not available individually. Why would anyone want a newly minted mono collection? The final mono songs were sometimes different. Stereo mixes were usually done days, if not weeks after the original mono mix, and could include different takes when the engineers made the overdubs. Stereo mixes, particularly for the first five albums, did not include as much critical listening from George Martin, and almost none from the Fab' Four. Also, stereo in early 60's England was not broadcast over the air, and the format was largely the preserve of the hi-fi snob. For more than half The Beatles recorded repertoire, the most affordable "weapon of choice" for the twisting, shouting teenage market was the mono mix. Ironically - this box set is the best The Beatles have ever sounded. Like the stereo sibling these are re-mastered, not re-mixed, but unlike the stereo, they have not been clipped or limited to push levels closer to current music ingested through our MP3 players. These albums are cleaner than ever before and compared to the 1980s CD editions you're taken aback by how much dynamic range is on those original tapes. Nothing in this box sounds like a 45 year old recording. Each disc is presented as if it were a miniature "33", replete with plastic anti-scratch sleeve, inner paper sleeve, original album cover, inserts and all original text rendered frustratingly small for anyone old enough to have bought the LPs the first time around. -- Hugo Munday

Beatles in Mono September 3, 2010 Kathleen Pertain (Newton, New Jersey, US) For the person interested in the music of the Beatles and not only in whether it is in stereo or high def crap. It sounds great to me any way you slice it. Brings me back to my young years.
Go for it! August 17, 2010 picklesthefrog 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This box set, while it can be pricey, is definitely worth it. I spent days going back and forth between this and the stereo box and really this box completely trumps the other one. Mono was how these albums were intended. (Of course the last three albums, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road, and Let it Be, are not included because it was originally done in stereo.) Still the way the CDs are packaged is exactly the way they were done in the vinyl LPs (except smaller). Very cute, indeed. It brings you back to the good ol' 60s and 70s. ONE THING TO BE WARY OF: BOOT LEG COPIES. Really a lot of these boxes can be scams. I was lucky. A good safety measure is that if this box is going for anything $100 it's probably a boot leg, especially if it's from a "just launched" seller. I would look for a good used box (which is what I have) if you really want to save some money. :D Happy shopping!
A must-own set for all Beatles fans August 13, 2010 James Poon This is by far one of my most treasured posessions. Not only does the set contain all the songs that I loved while growing up, it opens my mind with the ones that I had never heard of before! I now can put my old LPs back in the attic and listen to the CDs eveywhere I go. Fantastic collection, highly recommended!
the power and the glory August 10, 2010 mr x (MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am not going to say that mono is the holy grail, that you must get this, that mono is best. I just think if you like The Beatles and have the money (and it is expensive), you should consider getting both the mono and stereo versions of every album they did. Both are great, and to be honest would you want A Day In The Life, I Am The Walrus or Strawberry Fields Forever in just mono? No. Stereo is excellent and fine, but has an "over there" quality, some things on left, some on the right, you have breathing room, you can analyze the musical elements. But in mono every sound is right in your face and in both ears the entire song, the bass is louder and usually more satisfying, you ride the wave of sound as various elements go higher and lower in the mix, unable to quite make sense of what all the sounds are, just taking pleasure at what The Beatles created. It packs a wallop and does something different in your head. I liken the mono box to the greatest AM radio you could ever imagine. Also there are the little differences in the mixes that also make mono distinctive and new. So by having both stereo and mono versions, you get two different experiences of all their great songs. You may not want to spend the money on the Mono Box, but if you like the music you should find some way to give these a listen.
Watch Out For Bootlegs July 16, 2010 Daniel A. Guarino (New York) 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
I was very pleased to find the Beatles remastered mono box set at such a reasonable price. Well, if it sounds too good to be true...
Fresh out of the shipping packaging, they were clearly cheap (very cheap) bootlegs. The CD jackets featured very poorly printed photos and were crudely folded and glued together. In fact they mostly stuck to each other and the flimsy plastic inner sleeves. Pretty tatty- even by bootleg standards. Oh, and the enclosed booklet is in Japanese. And The box was dented. Needless to say I contacted the seller (twice)---and heard nothing. Still I am happy to report the recordings on the discs are the real deal and sound >incredible<. A real ear opener. At least in that I feel I got what I wanted for the money. But if you're thinking about getting this terrific package, spend the bucks, pounds, euros, whatever, buy from a reputable known source, get the whole package and >fully< enjoy the real thing.
